Unclogging a Kitchen Sink Drain with Drano

I am lucky enough to get the chance to fix our kitchen sink drain using a free Drano product I received at a Hubcamp I recently attended. (The Hubcamp, by the way, was a training session for using Hubpages, and I thought it was done very well.)

I was given Drano Snake Plus Pro Concentrate, which includes a red "snake" for getting gunk out of your drains. A great solution if you currently have a clogged drain, to get the water to go down.

I didn't have a clogged drain but I do have pretty temperamental sinks. Our bathroom sink and kitchen sink clog up on us pretty regularly.

I tried using the red snake tool, which is a long thin piece of plastic with rigged edges so it can pick up nasty hairy cloggy stuff in your drains. First I tried it on our bathroom sink and found nothing. It came out clean as a whistle.

I tried it on our kitchen sink and it picked up some brown ick, but basically not much else, just a very minute amount of dirt.

I'm sure if there were a hairball stuck down a drain it'd work fine. So I cleaned it off and we'll be keeping it to use in case the shower drain or bathroom sink drain cause any problems.

I decided to try the Drano Pro Concentrate Gel on the kitchen sink, since that's the one that most likely has gunk in it. We don't have a garbage disposal - just use one of those mesh cup coverings which can (and does) slide around and let food in. About once every few months the sink clogs up and we have to let it sit until the water drains down. So something's going on but the red snake wasn't able to fish out the problem.

I'm sure the Pro Concentrate Gel will help us out though.

How to Use Drano

It's very easy.

1. Use the red snake to pull out any grossness.

2. You might want to get a kettle ready if you're like me and live in San Francisco where it takes a while for "hot" water to come out of the sink.

3. Pour the entire bottle of Drano Pro Concentrate down the drain.

4. Wait 1/2 an hour.

5. Pour hot water down the drain to get rid of the Drano.

6. Enjoy an unclogged drain.

Simple to Use and it Works!

If you'll take a look at my Step 5 picture, you'll see a nice, shiny metal drain where the Drano Pro Concentrate Gel collected before falling through the drain. I'm pretty confident that Drano cleaned out the plumbing that I can't see and expect not to have clog problems in the future thanks to Drano.
